Camden’s Transportation Future?
In this episode of the Get ’N Your Business Podcast, host Allison Shores speaks with Shannon Nettles of the Camden County Board of Commissioners and transportation planners Glenn Coyne and Kalanos Johnson from GMC about Camden County’s new Comprehensive Transportation Plan.
The plan will help guide transportation decisions across Camden County for the next 20 years and beyond. It will examine more than roads and vehicles—it will also consider sidewalks, bicycle routes, pedestrian safety, trails, transit, freight movement, traffic congestion, commuting patterns, and access to major destinations such as Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.
The planning team is currently gathering data and listening to residents, businesses, local governments, and community organizations. Public feedback will help identify transportation problems, establish priorities, and create a list of potential short-, medium-, and long-term projects.
Key Points
The plan covers Camden County and all three municipalities while also considering travel to surrounding counties and Florida.
Transportation planning includes roads, traffic signals, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, trails, transit, freight, and pedestrian access.
Planners will study traffic counts, crash data, development patterns, building permits, commuting routes, and community feedback.
Residents will have several opportunities to participate through surveys and public open houses.
The process is expected to take approximately 14 months.
Recommendations will include potential projects, estimated costs, funding sources, and implementation timelines.
The completed plan will help local leaders make budgeting, grant, development, and infrastructure decisions.
Traffic lights, road improvements, and sidewalks require research, funding, coordination, and approval—they cannot simply be installed without proper study.
The goal is to create a practical transportation plan that can be implemented, rather than one that “sits on a shelf.”
